The McDowell Mountain Ranch Park & Aquatic Center opened to the public in January of a 2007 after 13-year planning and development effort. The consensus is that it was worth the wait.
The Center features three major components: the aquatic complex‚ an activities center and a very popular skateboarding facility.
The aquatic complex itself has five exciting elements‚ a 25 yard competition pool with 8 lanes for lap swimming and two one-meter diving boards‚ a 6‚100 square foot leisure pool with four additional lap lanes‚ a children's play area‚ a 25 foot tall water slide and‚ last but not least‚ a 650' "lazy river" which‚ by all accounts‚ is a "tubing" paradise.
The 15‚000 square foot building that serves as the formal entrance to the overall complex houses a state of the art fitness facility donated to the city by Scottsdale Healthcare. The facility also includes rooms for dance‚ aerobics‚ meetings and offices. It has fully equipped locker rooms‚ restrooms and concession facilities.
The 16‚000 square foot skateboard facility was designed in conjunction with local users and includes such features as a banked hip‚ a hubba ledge‚ step up‚ a fun box‚ a grind ledge‚ a flat bar and a manhole bowl. There is even a covered spectator viewing area with easy access to restrooms and the concession area.
Renowned artist‚ Norie Sato has created a shimmering wall of acrylic and mylar that interacts with the sun and the wind to present an ever changing face to viewers. The work‚ Cactus Mirage‚ serves as a screen for the park’s massive waterslide. For more information‚ please visit the Scottsdale Public Art site
