Sanctuary Golf Course at WestWorld offers an ecological alternative to traditional golf. The course’s 6‚650-yard‚ par-71 layout takes advantage of natural terrain and vegetation‚ and is the Arizona’s first Audubon International Institute Signature Status course and just the 17th in the world to receive this coveted designation.
To attain certification as an Audubon Signature Status‚ the Audubon Institute’s requirements guidelines regarding issues such as wildlife habitat enhancement‚ water quality management and conservation‚ waste reduction and management and pest control were incorporated into the original design.
"Sanctuary has done an excellent job of integrating the golf course with the environment‚" said Miles Smart‚ Ph.D‚ the Audubon’s Director of Environmental Planning. "One feature the golf course has incorporated that is beneficial to the entire area is onsite re-charge wells that re-purify run-off water from the golf course and return it to the ground‚ replenishing the area’s natural water source." This is particularly significant since much of the course is located in s storm water retention area.
Golf course architect‚ Randy Heckenkemper‚ designed Sanctuary to take advantage of the land’s natural topography and vegetation. The course features 80-acres of turf‚ 55 sand bunkers and one large water feature complete with two multi-tiered waterfalls.
"We are extremely proud to offer a golf course that provides so many opportunities‚" said Tom Patrick‚ Vice President of Suncor Golf. "I don’t think anyone who plays Sanctuary will leave disappointed because there’s something here for everyone. If you enjoy good‚ risk-reward golf and a beautiful‚ outdoor setting‚ Sanctuary is a sure-bet."
